Rhynoplasty

Nose is a very important part of a facial characteristic possibly having a significant role in the pleasant, attractive or non-harmonic overall impression it creates. A nose of inappropriate size or shape may spoil the appearance. It may cause psychic stress, deteriorating self-assurance and the positive self-image.

WHEN SHOULD I GET RHYNOPLASTY?

An oversized nose or its inappropriate shape may disturb visual harmony, in certain cases causing serious inhibitions to those affected. Thus, rhynoplasty may be an aid in regaining self-assurance.

As all noses differ, patients have different expectations. But what everybody long for and what we can help people to obtain through a well-designed rhynoplasty are:

a more perfect nose,

  a natural overall impression,

a more esthetic character.

HOW IS RHYNOPLASTY DONE?

The aims of rhynoplasty may vary depending on the different expectations: diminishment, enlargement, shortening, lengthening, narrowing, broadening, straightening, lifting, or eliminating curves and unevenness.

During in the operative consultations the surgeon and the patient harmonise their opinions. The patient tells the surgeon what kind of changes he/she would like to have, while the surgeon expresses his/her opinion, whether the demanded shape of nose fits the patient’s face, or what kind of correction is advisable for the patient to undergo, as having a positive effect on the overall appearance.

The appropriate consultation is inevitable, since it reveals, how far the it is possible to go when changing the shape of the nose without changing the facial character as a whole during the plastic surgery.

Otherwise, even if creating a perfectly shaped nose in itself, the expected outcome will not be achieved, thus the patient cannot adapt him/herself to his/her environment. The aim of rhinoplasty is a natural refinement of the shape of the nose.

Prior to the procedure, general and local examinations have to be done to value the risks of the treatment. The procedure is always performed in general anaesthesia.

The essence of the procedure is the transformation of the bony and cartilaginous structure of the nose. As the procedure is done within the nose in most cases, there are no visible scars to remain. Of course there are cases when an outer  incision is needed, scars of these heal nicely and are hardly visible.

Length of the procedure - depending in the extent of the changes – is approximately 1.5 hour. The compulsory clinical stay-in is 1 night.

HEALING AND RECOVERY AFTER RHYNOPLASTY

The type of the post-operative bandage depends in the extent of the plastic surgery. When only the tip of the nose, that is, only the cartilaginous part was formed, there is no need for plastering in most cases. When the bony structure was also changed, (hump removal, narrowing), plaster bandage is applied.

As the fusion of the nose-bones lasts for 5 weeks, the patient has to take care, that the given area should not be affected by any major trauma. The final result sets in 6 months.

Work capacity returns in 7-10 days.

Bleeding is a post-operative complication, possible right after the surgery.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

Swelling and haematoma around the eyes are expectable when the plaster is removed, absorbing in 6-8 days, not more than 10 days.

Scarring of the inner surface may be a long-term complication, causing a hard and stiff nose. That may make a second operation necessary to remove the scars.
